Instagram Teen Account

A restricted account mode Instagram automatically applies to all users under 16. By default it blocks messages from people the teen does not already follow, limits sensitive content in Explore and Reels, and requires parental permission to change most settings. It launched in September 2024 and was applied retroactively to existing accounts of under-16 users.

How kids use it

If your teenager's Instagram has new restrictions, or you see a prompt to set up parental supervision, Teen Account is likely the reason. It is separate from Instagram's Supervision tool — Supervision is an opt-in feature that gives a parent a Family Center dashboard with time-usage data and follower visibility.

Is “Instagram Teen Account” something to worry about?

Good news — "Instagram Teen Account" is a protective feature, not a threat. The catch with platform safety features is that most ship OFF by default, or only half-configured.

  • Turn it on deliberately and re-check it after big app updates — settings occasionally reset or move.
