What it actually is

VALORANT is a free-to-play first-person tactical shooter from Riot Games where teams of five compete to plant or defuse a bomb or eliminate the other team. It's one of the most-played games among teens globally, with in-match voice and text chat enabled by default — including with random opponents. In July 2026, Riot launched a parent portal that lets a guardian toggle communications off, manage the friends list, and see which adult accounts have messaged your teen in the last 30 days.

Setting up the Riot Parent Portal

  1. Your teen logs in to account.riotgames.com
  2. Under account settings, look for Add a parent/guardian — this turns the account into a parent-managed accountParent-Managed AccountWhatsApp's under-13 account type (launched March 2026) where a parent sets up and controls the child's account from their own phone. Limited to messaging and calling — no Meta AI, no disappearing messages, no Channels.
  3. Enter your email address; Riot emails you a verification link
  4. Bookmark that link — it always returns you to the portal, or you can request a new one later

What the portal lets you do

  • Comms Settings: Turn off text chat and voice chat independently, or restrict both to friends only
  • Friends: View and remove accounts from your teen's friends list
  • Message history: See the list of adult (18+) accounts that directly messaged your teen in the last 30 days (account names only, not message content)
  • Account management: Change Riot ID, reset password, enable multi-factor authentication
  • Playtime limits (PC only): Set monthly hour caps

If you want to stop stranger contact entirely

  1. Log in to the parent portal
  2. In Comms Settings, turn off both text chat and voice chat
  3. Under Friends, restrict who can send your teen friend requests

What the portal cannot show you

You can see who messaged your teen but not the message content. Riot says you can request message history through Player Support if you need it.
