TextNow is a free calling and texting service that provides users with a phone number and unlimited talk/text over Wi-Fi or a cellular network. It's marketed as an alternative to traditional carrier plans, with optional paid data plans. The app runs on ads or can be upgraded to ad-free versions.
TextNow includes a passcode feature to lock the app itself. However, the app does not offer built-in parental controls. To monitor use, you'll need to rely on device-level tools: iOS Screen Time or Android Family Link can restrict app installation, set usage limits, and monitor data consumption. Check your phone plan for parental-control options if you have TextNow Wireless active. Discuss the app openly with your teen, including why they want it and what privacy boundaries you both agree on.
