Live gifting
Risk flagSending paid virtual items — coins, roses, castle animations — to a creator during a live video stream. Viewers buy virtual currency with real money and send 'gifts' that the creator converts back to cash. TikTok, YouTube, and Twitch all have versions of this system.
How kids use it
Watch for gift-card purchases or unexplained charges on a linked account. TikTok raised the minimum gifting age to 18 in 2024 after reports of streamers pressuring young viewers to spend. Some livestreams are deliberately designed to coax gifting, and the pressure can feel social — like cheering — rather than financial.
