Florida AG proposes default overnight limits and chatbot restrictions for under-18s

By The Rundown  ·  EditorWorth watching

Florida's attorney general proposed the Safe Screens Act on 22 October 2026, legislation that would require app stores to verify age before minors download apps and set default protections for 14–17-year-olds including overnight quiet hours, daily time limits, and autoplay turned off. It would also restrict AI chatbot services from offering features that simulate companionship, claim to be human, or generate sexual content for minor accounts. This is a legislative proposal that still needs to pass the Florida Legislature; it is not yet in effect anywhere.

What to do

These defaults are available right now: set overnight Screen Time limits on iPhone or Digital Wellbeing schedules on Android — no legislation required.
