FTC Publishes Parent Guide for Taking Down a Child's Shared Explicit Image

By The Rundown  ·  EditorHigh risk

The FTC published a consumer guide in October 2026 walking parents through what to do when someone shares an explicit image of their child online. Under the Take It Down Act — enforced by the FTC since May 2026 — covered platforms must remove the image and any known identical copies within 48 hours of a valid takedown request. If a platform misses that deadline, parents can file a complaint at TakeItDown.ftc.gov; the guide also advises filing a report with NCMEC's CyberTipline and contacting local police and the FBI.

What to do

Know the three-step process before you need it: (1) report to NCMEC's CyberTipline at missingkids.org; (2) request takedown from the platform — required within 48 hours by law; (3) file at TakeItDown.ftc.gov if the platform doesn't comply.
