Mastodon is a network of independently run servers ('instances') with chronological, ad-free feeds and no engagement algorithm — appealing for exactly that reason. But there's no central safety team: moderation quality varies wildly by server, some instances host adult or extremist content, and federation means posts from unmoderated servers can still reach your kid. Which server they're on is the whole safety story.
Mastodon offers strong user controls:
- Content Warnings: Posts can be hidden behind content warnings, which you reveal intentionally.
- Word Filters: You can filter specific words or phrases from your feed to avoid content you don't want to see.
- Account Muting & Blocking: Mute or block accounts and entire instances (servers).
- Server Choice: Join different Mastodon servers, each with different moderation policies. Pick one with moderation aligned with your values.
- Privacy Levels: Posts can be set to followers-only, unlisted, or public.
- Multiple Accounts: Switch between accounts to compartmentalize your online presence.
Parent tip: Your teen's experience depends heavily on which Mastodon server they join. Research the server's moderation policy and community guidelines before sign-up.
