Is ChatGPT safe for kids?
High risk
The parental controls let you set schedules and limits — not read conversations — and a credible watchdog rated the teen experience 'unacceptable risk' for under-18s within weeks of launch.

What to do
Ages 13+ with parental controls linked and Quiet Hours enabled for school nights. For 13–15s, disable Memory and Image generation; make clear ChatGPT is a tool, not a companion.
What it actually is
ChatGPT launched a dedicated teen experience on August 18, 2026, for users 13–17, with automatic safeguards on self-harm, violence, eating disorders, and sexually explicit content, plus parental controls that let parents set usage schedules and manage key features. This is an AI assistant, not a social platform — no strangers can contact your teen through it, but the AI is designed to be engaging and responsive. Common Sense Media tested the teen experience and rated it 'unacceptable risk' for under-18s in October 2026, finding safeguard failures across more than 4,000 test prompts.
Link your account to your teen's
- Open the ChatGPT app → tap your profile photo → Settings → Parental controls → Add family member
- Enter your teen's phone number or email — they receive a link to confirm
- Alternatively, your teen can start from their own Settings → Parental controls
Each teen can link to only one parent or guardian at a time.
Settings you can manage once linked
- Reduce sensitive content — adds extra restrictions on potentially distressing material
- Voice Mode — can be disabled (off by default for teen accounts)
- Image generation — can be enabled or disabled
- Memory — controls whether ChatGPT retains context across conversations
- Study Mode — ChatGPT guides with questions instead of giving direct answers
- Study hours — sets a schedule; ChatGPT still works outside those hours but shows a reminder
- Quiet hoursQuiet HoursA scheduled time window (used by ChatGPT's parental controls and similar tools) when an app can't be used at all — typically set for overnight or school hours. — sets a schedule during which ChatGPT is fully inaccessible
Your teen cannot change any setting you have locked while accounts are linked.
Safety notifications
- Alerts are sent for serious self-harm concerns, disordered-eating behaviors in Chat, and if the account is deactivated for violence-related conversations
- Configure how you receive them (email, SMS, push) under Settings → Safety notifications
- Notifications do not include conversation content
What you cannot see
Parents cannot read or monitor conversation content. The parental controls cover settings and narrow safety alerts only.
If your teen unlinks
Either party can unlink at any time. You receive a notification if your teen unlinks.
