What it actually is
BAND is a group communication platform designed for families, friends, schools, and teams to stay connected. It combines messaging, photo sharing, event scheduling, and real-time video calls. The app allows users to create or join groups, post updates, share memories, and coordinate activities through calendars and task lists.
BAND offers group-level controls that parents should review:
- Group Privacy: Check whether groups are private (invitation-only) or public. Private groups are safer for families and school teams.
- Notifications: Disable alerts from groups your child doesn't actively need notifications for to reduce distraction and screen time.
- Photo/Video Sharing: Review the group's media-sharing policy. Consider disabling camera/microphone permissions at the OS level if your child is very young.
- Location Sharing: Location sharing is optional and per-post. Disable the Location permission in iOS Settings if you prefer your child never share location through BAND.
- Video Calls: Ensure your child understands group calls are recorded and visible. Review who has access before joining.
- Face ID/Biometric: Disable Face ID unlock if you want to retain device-level oversight of app access.
