Talking stage

The period of daily texting and DMing before two people decide whether to date — more than friendship, but no label or commitment yet. It can last days or months and is often emotionally intense. Most teens treat it as the required first step before anything becomes 'official.'

How kids use it

If your teen says they are 'talking to someone' or 'in the talking stage,' they mean this pre-relationship phase, not casual conversation. Worth knowing because the level of contact — late-night texts, voice notes, constant notification-checking — is usually not visible to parents until feelings are already deep.

Is “Talking stage” something to worry about?

No — "Talking stage" is ordinary 2026 teen vocabulary, not a warning sign. Knowing it just makes you harder to talk past.
