Canon event

An experience that was meant to happen — painful or not — because it is part of your story and who you become. The phrase comes from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), where certain events are 'canon' and cannot be prevented. Teens apply it to breakups, failures, embarrassing moments, and big life changes.

How kids use it

Usually heard as 'that was my canon event' or 'you need your canon event.' It is mostly a healthy way for teens to make meaning out of difficult experiences rather than dwelling on them. Knowing the phrase helps you follow what your teen is processing — and why they might insist that something painful was actually important.

Is “Canon event” something to worry about?

No — "Canon event" is ordinary 2026 teen vocabulary, not a warning sign. Knowing it just makes you harder to talk past.
