Bed rotting

Spending hours or an entire day in bed scrolling, watching videos, and doing nothing in particular — framed as rest or self-care. Most teens use it casually and positively ('I bed-rotted all weekend'). A 2024 American Academy of Sleep Medicine survey found roughly one in four Gen Z teens described doing this regularly to cope with stress.

How kids use it

On its own, occasional bed rotting is usually just unstructured downtime. The pattern worth noticing is when it becomes the default response to any free time, especially paired with withdrawing from friends or activities — that combination is worth a conversation about what your teen is actually avoiding.

Is “Bed rotting” something to worry about?

No — "Bed rotting" is ordinary 2026 teen vocabulary, not a warning sign. Knowing it just makes you harder to talk past.
