XChat is a private messaging app for X (formerly Twitter) users, built on end-to-end encryption. It lets you chat with anyone already on X without needing phone numbers or separate invites. Every message is encrypted with a unique key pair, and you can control disappearing messages, edit or delete messages for everyone, and block screenshots.
Privacy & Security Settings
- PIN Protection: Set a strong PIN during first login—this protects your encryption keys and never leaves your device.
- Disappearing Messages: Control how long messages remain before auto-deletion (per message or conversation default).
- Screenshot Blocking: Enable per conversation to prevent recipients from saving message content.
- Message Editing/Deletion: Edit or delete any sent message for all participants, limiting accidental permanence.
- Block & Mute: Block users to prevent contact; mute conversations to reduce notifications without deletion.
- Review Your X Network: Before using XChat heavily, audit who you follow on X—they automatically appear as contactable in XChat.
For Parents
- XChat contacts mirror your X social graph, so know who your teen follows.
- The encryption is strong, but it doesn't prevent contact with strangers you're already following on X.
- Disappearing messages and screenshot-blocking can enable risky behavior; discuss expectations around privacy vs. safety.
