Is WeChat safe for kids?

An all-in-one app whose 'People Nearby' and location features let strangers discover your kid by physical proximity.

What to do
Not recommended for under 13. Watch closely ages 13–15; location sharing and open friend networks create exposure to strangers. Fine for 16+ with parental awareness of payment features and mini-app permissions.

What it actually is
WeChat bundles messaging, payments, a social feed (Moments), and mini-apps into one platform. The standout kid risk is discovery by proximity: 'People Nearby' and 'Shake' surface your child to nearby strangers, and contacts can request real-time location. It's heavily monitored and not built around Western-style parental controls, so turning off discovery and location is the priority.
Key Parental Settings
Privacy & Contacts
- Go to Settings > Account > Privacy to control who can see your Moments, add you as a friend, and view your profile.
- Use Blacklist (Settings > Account > Blocked List) to restrict contact from specific users.
Location Sharing
- Turn off real-time location sharing by default. Only enable it temporarily when needed.
- Check Settings > General > Plug-ins and disable location-related Mini Programs if unused.
Moments & Social
- Set Moments visibility to "Friends Only" or "Private" in Settings > Account > Privacy.
- Review who can comment on and like Moments posts.
Mini Programs & Games
- Disable Mini Programs in Settings > General > Plug-ins if your child does not use them.
- Remove games from the Games tab or restrict access via app-level parental controls on the device.
Payments (Weixin Pay)
- Ensure payment methods are not linked to your child's account, or use strong password protection if necessary.
- Review payment history in Wallet (if enabled in your region).
Message Retention
- WeChat stores chat history by default. Review what is being saved and stored on the device.
Device-Level Controls
- Use Apple's Screen Time to restrict WeChat usage and limit who can initiate contact.
